Instructor Bios
Heidi Lazorko
Heidi loves all things dance, be it swing, salsa, or ballroom. First learning ballroom dancing with the U of S Ballroom Dancing Club, later joining the U of S Swing Dance Club, Heidi brings a diverse partner dancing perspective to the team. Willing to take on any dancing challenge, Heidi is quickly becoming a well respected, dedicated member of the Swing and Ballroom dance communities.
Dave Hall
Dave's long time love of Swing, Blues and classic R&B music was propelled to a new level when he discovered this Swing Dancing stuff. Taking more than a casual interest in the music, Dave has built a huge collection of swing-era jazz and other swinging music and can often be found DJing a set or two at Lindy Hop events in Canada and the U.S. although he still thinks DJs should be replaced with live music.
Attending many workshops and classes with top international instructors, Dave has gained an appreciation for the diversity of swing dancers. Being a little dense, often having to take a class 2 or 3 or more times before it clicks, Dave tries to distill and teach the escence of swing dancing to make learning moves as easy as possible.
Julie Kiraly
Julie Kiraly has been teaching swing dance for over 4 years. With a drive to learn, she has travelled extensively to various cities across the world for swing dance training. Julie is a natural at both teaching and at dancing. She guides her students through a class very well, and is quick to observe when students are having difficulties.
Birkley Wisniewswki
Birkley is a swing dance enthusiast who really cares about your progress as a dancer. He has been teaching for 4 years, and has travelled beyond Edmonton for countless swing workshops, private lessons, and camps across North America. In his spare time, Birkley practices new moves, studies old dance clips, and DJs swing music. You ll find that Birkley is very personable, explains concepts clearly, enjoys technique, and keeps the classes running smoothly.
Class Descriptions
Nail Those Basics
Everyone knows that getting the swing-out to feel right takes a lot of practice and learning. Birkley is going to focus on the fundamentals of Lindy Hop and help make the dance feel a whole lot better.
Smokin' Charleston
Dave and Heidi are going to teach you basic Charleston and more! This flashy, rhythmic dance is as fun to watch as to do - Dave and Heidi will also pull out some sweet moves in Charleston you'll enjoy learning.
Lunch
This is where we eat, drink, and chill. Enjoy!
Best Lindy Moves Ever
Think of how good gelato tastes. That's how this class will be. Gelato's got some awesome flavours, and so does Lindy. Learn some kick-ass 8-count Lindy moves from Dave and Heidi!
Rhythm & Rhyme
Birk and Dave - yes, two guys - are going to share their knowledge on rhythm, music, phrasing, musical interpretation, and jazz/blues movement. This is the kind of stuff that makes the difference between an intermediate and an advanced dancer.
Doin' The Jive
Sunday morning jumps off with lindy moves done in 6-count, otherwise known as jive steps. Dave and Heidi have an extensive database of jive steps moves that they are eager to teach.
6's and 8's
Lindy Hop, actually, is not only 8-count. It is also 6-count and more! Dave and Heidi are going to focus on the leading and following of 6-count movements versus 8-count movements, and of course, have you apply it.
Tandem Charleston
Julie and Birkley are known for their crazy Charleston stuff - you'll see them even inventing Charleston moves that just work. They are going to focus on tandem Charleston, one of the coolest looking and most sought-after charleston positions.
Spunk & Style
Have you seen Julie's swivels? What about Birk's flying swingouts? And what about the silky partner steps that contrast those movements? Come check it out at Spunk and Style with both of them.
